INDONESIA
Has rich cultural heritage and remote untouched atmosphere. Offers stuning waterfalls, beaches, rolling hills, mangrove trees that look like they are dancing trees. I love the tranquility of this place. It has great sunsets and sunrises, natural unspoilt landscapes. It offers the kind of sanctuary that photographers yearn for.

When I first picked up a camera, I didn't question why I was drawn to photography or what it meant to me. But over time, I've come to realise just how powerful and important photography is in my life.
Photography allows me to capture joyful, meaningful moments, preserving memories that might otherwise fade. Each image I take is a testament to my unique perspective and the way I experience the world. I strive to capture scenes as they speak to me, making photography a balancing and creative outlet that brings me deep fulfillment.
More than just an artistic pursuit, photography helps me stay present and mindful. It connects me more deeply to the world around me, encouraging me to notice details and appreciate my surroundings in new ways.
I also love the process of photography itself. Sometimes, I’ll spend a whole day shooting and not like a single photo—but I still cherish the experience, because I had fun and learned something new.
Sharing my work, teaching others, and appreciating the photography of those around me is another source of joy. I’m always eager to improve my skills and connect with like-minded people who share my passion for art and beauty. Photography has truly become a journey of discovery, connection, and personal growth for me.

What is my favourite photo?
Among all the images I have captured, one stands out as a personal favourite. I selected this photograph because it encapsulates the elements I am most passionate about: unique trees, dramatic clouds, vibrant colour, and the creative use of long exposures. This particular shot was among the first successful long-exposure images I ever produced, and it remains a touchstone for both my appreciation of the technique and my broader passion for photography. If I were to choose just one image to represent my identity as a photographer, this would be it.
“I attended a 12-day photography workshop in Iceland with Wendy Klein.
After I sustained a knee injury on the flight to Iceland, it completely changed the landscapes I was able to traverse and shoot. Wendy patiently guided me to the best spots I could shoot from and helped me with settings and compositions for various shots: Sunrise, Sunset, Northern Lights, Waterfalls, long exposures, etc. She taught me basic starting points with settings including finding the proper color balance, filters, and how to adjust according to what I wanted to accomplish with my photos. When I couldn’t walk to the proper spot, she brought my camera to the right spot and pushed the shutter button for me after I adjusted the camera settings. She even lent me one of her ND filters to use during long exposures because I was inadvertently missing a few components in my filter system. Wendy went above and beyond to deliver a fantastic experience of incredible scenery and education! I highly recommend joining Wendy on her trips if you want to learn her techniques for amazing landscape and long-exposure photography."

“I just returned from an extraordinary ten day photo excursion with Wendy Klein to Iceland. I’ve known Wendy for over five years online and this was my first time meeting her in person. I’ve admired her landscape photography and it was nice to see her in action. Wendy is a true master at her craft and it was pure joy watching a master at work.
This was an adventure of a life time and a dream come true. First to work with a world renown photographer. Second, to visit a country that has so many photo opportunities and lastly, to learn firsthand composition, camera settings and most importantly, photo editing. My goal was to challenge myself and improve my photography skills. With Wendy’s help I met those goals. I hope you get to take one of her workshops or go on a photo excursion with her. She is enthusiastic, kind, knowledgeable and has amazing boundless energy. She was there to answer questions and give pointers in the field and during post processing.
I can’t thank Wendy enough for this unique small group photo experience.”

“Wendy is not just an amazing award-winning photographer, but also a patient, respectful, organized, and knowledgeable workshop tutor. Whether you are new to photography, an old hand, or somewhere in between, Wendy is able to guide, teach, and encourage. I definitely came away from her workshops with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, having learned or refined new skills, and feeling welcome and part of the group.”

My Adventure trip to Sumba island:
If you've not heard about Sumba Island before, and simply interested to learn more about why I’m writing about it, read on!
Sumba is a massive island bigger than Bali, and there are no road signs one can get lost very easy. While Sumba is just a 1 hour flight from Bali, it will blow your mind at the difference between the two. Honestly, you couldn't get two islands more further apart. While Bali is definitely popular with tourists, you won't find a much more authentic island than Sumba.
There's two tiny airports in Sumba, one in East Sumba called Waingapu and one in West Sumba called Tambolaka airport. We flew into Tambolaka and out of Waingapu having to book two separate flights with Wings Air. I was picked up at Tambolaka, which is where my tour started, from West Sumba, and finishing in East Sumba.
As soon as I stepped off the plane, I was greeted by friendly locals all waving at me, and our wonderful guide who called me Miss Wendy! I left Tambolaka Airport and started the tour, first stop was our hotel! It was basic and clean.
Sumba is an island in Indonesia, which is the type of place which reminds us about what travel used to be like. The island is quiet without a lot traffic, but with a landscape which is so diverse and pristine. Not only with its beautiful beaches and landscape but also its unique, well-preserved culture and traditions. The common saying “time stands still” is rarely more appropriate than it is here in mysterious Sumba.
People still practice their ancestors’ religion and rituals that first emerged over 4,500 years ago. Due to the island’s remote location, its flourish obscurity has allowed it to omit the passage of time, holding steadfast to old traditions ever since.
You will see pristine waterfalls that almost don't look real, traditional villages, dense jungle, beaches with wild horses, rolling hills and the famous dancing trees amongst the mangroves, that you'll wonder why more tourists aren't flocking here as of yet.
I booked 8 days in Sumba, although I left at 6:30am on the 8th day so we basically had 7 full days there.
Was it enough time to see everything? Absolutely! It is best to go to Sumba island during the Dry season! (May to September)
March, is their "Pasola festival". The Pasola Festival is a celebration of the harvest season, and it is believed to be a way to appease the spirits and ensure a good harvest for the coming year. The festival involves a mock battle between two groups of horse riders, who throw wooden spears at each other while riding at full speed. The Sumbanese men and also their horses are wearing traditional and colorful clothes during this ceremony.
I was totally wowed by the beauty of the place as well as the peacefulness of it too. You will see pristine waterfalls that almost don't look real, traditional villages, dense jungle and rolling hills that you'll wonder why more tourists aren't flocking here as of yet. There are narrow walkways between the rice paddy fields, which will bring you to a secret waterfall in the middle of them, which you can't see from the road. This waterfall is called, "Weekacura Waterfall".
Sumba Island is one of the poorest islands in Indonesia, and yes most parts are safe to visit. While the island isn't set up for tourism like Bali is, the two islands couldn't be further apart.
Animals are traded on the island, and are a sign of wealth between families. So, you'll see a buffalo outside a houses.
You'll see tombstones outside the family home. Tombs are kept outside the family home so their ancestors can protect them.
The phone network is very patchy in Sumba and even the wifi in hotels didn't work all the time! But, I loved being disconnected from my phone and able to fully appreciate where I was.
I had a riot of an adventure! Our 4WD broke down, and the replacement had tires smoother than a baby's bottom. I tiptoed across bamboo poles without rails, and climbed rickety ladders up cliffs to reach waterfalls. My drone decided to play Tarzan and got stuck high in the jungle. I did a spectacular dive off a rock in a lagoon, earning zero style points. Those eerie night noises? Just a gecko having a giggle. I took photos knee-deep in water, got stuck in mud that could swallow a shoe, and danced around sea urchins and mangrove roots.
Using squat toilets with no loo paper (mini hoses supplied) and always-wet floors was a gymnastic feat. Meals were either tasteless or set-your-mouth-on-fire, spicy, (and were cheap,) with enough rice to start a paddy field. Filtered water was our lifeline, and finding good coffee was like a treasure hunt. Despite it all, living and eating like the locals was a blast!
I really loved my time on Sumba island! Can’t wait to return in July, 2025 where I’ll be conducting workshops! All three workshops for 2026 are fully booked. Contact me if interested in joining me for 2027. It will be 7 nights 8 days!
